I think the standard is set by Wieland the smith (also known in the UK
as Vayland Smith who - as described in the Velents þáttr smiðs, a nordic
and Germanic saga - made a bread knife so sharp that it cut through
bread, bread board and table like foam.
Wieland features also in a different form in Völundarkviða which has
been translated into English by Auden, though the bread knife reference
seems be absent.
I presume if your knife was of that kind, bread crumbs would indeed be
of no concern, serrated or not.
