Alan seems to have solved his problem by the fairly drastic approach of a
system restore.
I would expect that the problem was that IE was configured to establish a
connection rather than just using the one already there on his LAN.
IE Internet options > Connections > ensure that "never dial a connection" is
selected
I too prefer Firefox but there are a number of sites which are not WC3
standard compliant and only work with IE. When I can I don't use these sites
but sometimes I have no choice and resort to IE.
