Dear all,
We would like to draw your attention to our symposium at the 33rd International Geological Congress to be held in Oslo from 6-14 August, 2008 (www.33igc.org).
MPN-03: Mineral replacement and mass transfer in hydrothermal systems: from the nanoscale to the megascale.
Conveners: Andrew Putnis, Germany ([log in to unmask]) and Ane K. Engvik, Norway ([log in to unmask])
Keynote and invited speakers:
Andreas Schmidt Mumm, University of Adelaide, Australia
Marian Holness, University of Cambridge, England
Alasdair Skelton, University of Stockholm, Sweden.
The role of fluids in the reequilibration of minerals and rocks is fundamental to understanding the mechanisms and kinetics of metamorphic and metasomatic processes. An important aspect of the problem is to determine the scale over which mass transfer takes place, the nature of the fluids which catalyse reactions, and the processes which promote fluid infiltration. Porosity generation due to coupled dissolution-reprecipitation and hydraulic fracture, as well as reaction interfaces between parent and product phases can be studied on the nanoscale as well as on the field scale. This session will focus on mechanisms of hydrothermal reactions and textural development from both experiments and studies of natural rocks.
We would welcome contributions on this theme. Deadline for abstract submission: 1 February 2008
