Peter and CSRG,
I understand there were 120 applicants and 24 were chosen to attend the cycling and walking 'sandpit'. There was a 'divergent phase' over the first day and a half during which we were encouraged to think widely and, through various activities, meet other participants. The 'convergent' phase collapsed quickly down to eight self-generated projects in self-selected teams.
Five of these projects have been asked to submit fully costed proposals to epsrc. We are given to understand that the total cost of these five projects is presently estimated to be more than the $4m available. Hence it is a competitive situation with bids to be submitted in January 2008.
The process certainly seems to have raised the profile of walking and cycling within epsrc very considerably, and I would encourage us all in CSRG to continue to think positively about further funding outside this call, and also separately to esrc and ahrc, as appropriate to our discipline and research subject area.
