> "Economic linkages and comparative advantage of the UK creative
> sector"
>
> Speaker: Dr Ya Ping Yin [University of Hertfordshire]
>
> Chair: Dr Keith Randle, Director of the Creative Industries
> Research and Consultancy Unit [CIRCU]
>
> The creative industries are frequently cited as making an
> increasingly important contribution to the UK economy. However,
> there has been little hard empirical evidence of the form this
> contribution takes.
>
> Dr Ya Ping Yin will present the results of a study which makes, for
> the first time, a systematic and detailed examination of the
> economic linkages between the UK creative industries and the rest
> of the economy as well as these industries’ comparative advantages
> in generating exports. The empirical results have revealed that
> industries in this sector exhibit distinct patterns in their
> relationship with the upstream suppliers, downstream clients and
> the factor and final markets as compared with the traditional
> industries in the primary and secondary sectors.
>
> A number of policy implications arise from the paper including
> identifying a potential role for government and local development
> agencies in enhancing local competitive capabilities through more
> targeted approaches. Furthermore, as the creative industries face
> an even stiffer challenge than the traditional manufacturing
> sectors in their effort to reap the full benefits of their
> enterprise, government policies regarding intellectual property
> rights and selective industrial subsidy may be effective tools in
> helping such industries to function and prosper.
