Hello Lisa,
If it coal fines then I would carry out loss on ignition and a few
calorific value tests on the affected soil and unaffected similar soil from
nearby sources. If it coal you should also see elevated PAH, arsenic and
Boron. This is often a problem in gardens where coal has been added to
soil.
What sort of iron levels are you finding that are such a worry ? Iron
levels
due to the natural iron minerals in UK rocks is often very very high. I
think I have some data on London Clay where the iron is partly due to
Pyrites.
