Subject: Coal / Iron Silicate

Lisa,
Float / sink tests are commonly used to assess the quantity of coal in (for
example) coal tips but the method might not be ideal for proving the
composition of your black fines.
Loss on ignition might be a cheap option (<£10) ? coal would give a high
value (>50% - ~95%), depending on how much other material was incorporated
in the sample.
Metals analysis for iron might prove the point, but I suspect that the
normal acid extraction used by labs for 'contaminated land' analysis might
not dissolve silicates.
A conclusive method might be SEM / EDXA (scanning electron microscopy /
energy dispersive X-ray analysis) ? which would give a visual assessment
which may confirm whether the particles are natural coal or manufactured
blasting grit, + an elemental analysis which would confirm or refute a high
iron (or other metal) content.
I used to work at TES Bretby labs who could offer any of the above. They
are also the ex-British Coal laboratory, so may have other ideas. Their
contact No : 01283 554400 (Dulcie Thornewill).
Hope this may help.
Regards
