I'm delighted to announce that Dr. Becky Inkster
will be joining us as a part time radiographer at
BUCNI. Becky did her PhD at Oxford in genetics
and also was a radiographer at their OCMR centre
where I was fortunate to work with her. She's
got tons of experience scanning on Siemen's
machines doing both structure and functional
work. In fact, she currently works full time at
GlaxoSmithKline investigating the relation
between genetic factors and brain structure so
she's a keen user of MRI herself.
Becky will be available to act as a scan operator
for anyone who could use her help starting in the
next week or so. We are currently trying to
determine a set of hours that suits her
schedule. This is likely to include tuesday
afternoons into the evening and one or two week
days in the early evening hours (eg 5-8pm) and/or
one weekend day. Once this schedule is
finalized, I will post it here. We are very keen
to make the most of this opportunity by using all
of Becky's hours each week. Hopefully this will
be easy to do as more and more people have
expressed an interest in acquiring data but have
been limited by not having trained scan operators.
One of the other things Becky will provide is a
chance to train individuals to become scan
operators. In general, this basically means that
an operator-trainee will have to run the scanner
under Becky's supervision for something like 10
hours of scanning time to get acquainted with how
it all works, what can go wrong, and what to do
when something does go wrong. So this time
can/should be combined with running your own studies.
Finally, it's important to note that we will be
charging £40/hr for scanning with Becky to cover
her salary. So regardless of your particular
arrangements for paying for scan fees, there is
an addition charge for every hour of Becky's time
that needs to be covered. In practice, this
means that for most people they will be paying
£40/hr for scanning, which is a major bargain!!
So please help to make use of this excellent new
resource and hopefully we'll all have new data pouring in. ;)
Cheers,
Joe
