Social Science Research Internship
Digital Health Group, Intel (Ireland)
The Digital Health team Europe, based in Leixlip, Ireland (just west of
Dublin) is looking for a Social Science intern to spend between ~6 and
11 months[1] with a team of designers, engineers and social scientists
(two anthropologists, cultural geographer, sociologist) working on R&D
and product incubation projects.
Intel's Digital Health Group (see http://www.intel.com/healthcare/) has
an ambitious charter and is currently working to develop technology
platforms than enable transformations in the way that healthcare is
experienced and configured. Currently areas of interest include chronic
disease management, health and wellness and independent living / ageing
populations. The Digital Health group in Ireland is also involved with a
major academic - industry collaboration, The TRIL Technology Research
for Independent Living Centre (see http://www.trilcentre.org/).
To date, interns in this group have encountered a wide range of the
teams' overall work. Projects involve a differing degree of engineering,
social science or business focus but interns are guaranteed to encounter
a mix of disciplines, a range of project sizes and types and to see a
lot of variety. There is the real opportunity of putting social science
theory and enquiry into application.
Our aim with internships is to give the student a central position in a
project - this allows them to learn from how we do things, but gives
them the opportunity to share their skills and experiences with
colleagues. Internships are paid positions.
Responsibilities
An intern's responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
* Conduct primary, qualitative research to understand human needs
for, and responses to, new technologies in the health and independent
living arenas
* Participate in multi-person, multi-disciplinary projects
involving social scientists, engineers and designers
* Translate research results into actionable ideas for both new
technologies and business strategy
* Report to Social Science research groups in Ireland and
Portland, Oregon
Qualifications:
* Must currently be enrolled in a Masters Program and/or Ph.D. in
Anthropology, Sociology or similar discipline at an accredited
university within the European Union.
* History of ethnographic research accomplishments
* Experience working with interdisciplinary teams.
* Able to provide meaningful contributions and work well with
social scientists and systems engineers to help move concepts from
exploratory fieldwork to pre-product prototypes that can be tested with
real people
* Expertise or demonstrable interest in developing healthcare
related concepts, prototypes, or products would be an added advantage
* Excellent communication and presentation skills.
* Multiple language skills a plus
