Dear crit-geog-forum list members,
** Apologies for cross-posting **
Please find below details for an ESRC case studentship on the changing
place of traditional food retailing. I'd be most grateful if you could
forward the details to anyone who you think might be interested in
applying for the post. You may well have some students who have recently
completed Masters courses who might be interested in a PhD studentship
like this?
The application date is 7th Dec 2007. The studentship is likely to start
in Feb 2008.
A more detailed 'flyer' about the project is also available. If
interested, please drop me a line and I'll e-mail it through.
Thanks for your help.
Best wishes,
Damian

CASE STUDENTSHIP:
Countryside and Community Research Institute, based at the University of
Gloucestershire
ESRC Collaborative (CASE) PhD Studentship
‘The changing place of traditional food retailing: a geographical analysis
of English retail markets’ – in conjunction with the National Association
of British Market Authorities.
This research project aims to determine the development of English retail
markets as a traditional form of retailing, focusing on the nature of
supply chain links with the local food economy, including market
opportunities associated with local food hubs. The role of ‘traditional’
forms of food retailing, including retail markets / local food hubs, is
mostly ignored in the local foods literature, focusing instead upon more
archetypal ‘alternative’ channels, especially farmers’ markets. This
project will draw on various concepts relating to local / alternative
economies, food retailing, supply chains and social embeddedness to fill
this research gap.
We are looking for a high quality candidate, preferably with or completing
an RT recognized advanced (Masters) course in Human Geography or related
area of Social Science. A CV, letter of application (making a case why you
should be appointed), the names of two referees, and details about how you
can be contacted between now and the end of December should be sent to
either Dr. Damian Maye or Prof. Brian Ilbery at the Countryside and
Community Research Institute, University of Gloucestershire, Dunholme
Villa, The Park, Cheltenham GL50 2RH by 7 Dec 2007.
For informal discussion and further details about the project, contact
either Dr. Damian Maye (01242 714133 or [[log in to unmask]) or Prof. Brian
Ilbery (01242 714389 or [[log in to unmask]]). Interviews are likely to be
held in mid December.
The ESRC meets the tuition fees and pays a basic (tax free) maintenance
grant of £14,300 p.a.
The collaborating organisation pays an additional £2,000 p.a.
