If you have a local copy of MEDLINE, retractions are marked in the XML.
Have a look at
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/elements_descriptions.html
If a paper is retracted, it should be given the PublicationType
"Retracted Publication" in its PublicationTypeList. Also you can follow
the citations in CommentsCorrections, specifically RetractionOf and
RetractionIn, to match the original articles with their retraction
notices.
I don't know whether PubMed or Ovid or any of the other search engines
support searching on these fields though. Also, as with everything else
that needs manual curation, you never know how thorough/complete these
annotations are til you check. (That would be an interesting experiment
to do...)
Hope that helps!

Subject: First word in title search?
I'm trying to find out how many papers on Medline have been retracted -
in most cases I'm assuming this will be due to doubt over the scientific
integrity of the research. Unfortunately retracted papers are not the
only ones that contain the words retraction in the title - even a quick
scan reveals terms such as clot retraction and eyelid retraction, and,
as far as I know, there could be many more. Most retracted papers appear
to start with the word "Retraction" usually followed by the name of the
original paper that is being retracted. Does anybody have any
suggestions for how I could use this information to search for
"retraction" as the first word in a title?
