Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced by War, Genocide and Other Human Rights 
Violations

JOB TITLE: Project Coordinator (full-time)			
Reports to: CURA Coordinating Committee
Salary: Negotiable (based on experience).

NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:
The Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced by War, Genocide, and other Human 
Rights Violations is a new five-year research project funded by the Social 
sciences and Humanities Resarch Council of Canada that will incorporate the 
methodology of oral history to explore survivors’ experiences and social 
memories of trauma and displacement. A team of over 40 university-based 
researchers and community co-applicants as well as 18 local community 
organizations will conduct life story interviews with 600 Montreal residents 
displaced by mass violence, ranging from the Holocaust to atrocity crimes 
committed in Rwanda, Cambodia, Latin America, Haiti, and South Asia. These 
interviews will then be made available to researchers, teachers and the public 
for their analysis and consideration.

Concordia University is the host institution for the Life Stories project and 
the administrative “home” of the project will be in the Centre for Oral History 
and Digital Storytelling, part of the university’s Department of History. The 
Centre’s recording equipment, computer workstations, interview studio as well 
as its video-conferencing room and dedicated training facilities will be made 
available to CURA team members and partners. The Project Coordinator will have 
office space within the Centre.

DESCRIPTION: 
The Life Stories project seeks a Program Coordinator who will oversee and 
supervise the project. The Coordinator, reporting directly to the project’s 
coordinating committee and lead researcher (Steven High), will be responsible 
for day-to-day project coordination and administration, including bilingual 
communications (both external and internal), management of facilities and 
project assistants. In addition, they will also manage the flow of interview 
data. This is an annual term position, with the potential for renewal within 
the time frame of the project. Salary will be commensurate with experience in 
accordance with the Project budget.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinating, facilitating and maintaining communications between CURA 
participants.            
2. Maintaining administrative records and files, including information from 
research projects, and committee activities.
3. Acting as secretary to the CURA Coordinating Committee and Committees; 
coordinating conference calls, meeting arrangements and taking minutes at all 
coordinating committee meetings.  
4. Working with CURA partners to support research and capacity-building goals
of the CURA.     
5. Organizing and facilitating project workshops.  
6. Preparing resource materials for project workshops and meetings.     
7. Coordinating media contacts and press releases. 
8. Assisting the Management Board and Program Committees in the development and 
implementation of program policies and procedures. 
9. Ensuring financial information is properly maintained and accessible to the 
Coordinating Committee and the Project Assembly. 
10. Preparing project updates and briefing notes for the Coordinating Committee 
as required. 
11. Assisting in the preparation of interim and annual reports required by 
SSHRC. 
12. Any other ancillary duties as may be required by the Coordinating Committee 
from time to time.  

QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, skills, and 
abilities:
•	Fluent in English and French.
•	Demonstrated ability to lead projects, set priorities, delegate tasks, 
and work as part of a team.
•	Either an Advanced Degree in a Suitable Field AND/OR extensive 
experience in Montreal’s refugee communities.
•	Demonstrate ability to conduct, synthesize, interpret, and communicate 
research under tight deadlines
•	Highly developed writing skills
•	Demonstrated ability to conduct formal interviews and/or lead 
workshops/meetings would be an asset
•	Poses a certain degree of technological knowledge (video and audio 
equipment, video and audio editing software)
•	Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants

LE PROJET :
Le projet Histoires de vie des Montréalais déplacés par la guerre, le génocide 
et autres violations aux droits de la personne est subventionné par le Conseil 
de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH). Par l’entremise d’une 
méthodologie axée sur l’histoire orale, le projet étudiera les expériences 
ainsi que les souvenirs de personnes ayant survécu aux traumatismes et aux 
déplacements provoqués par la guerre. Une équipe composée de 40 chercheurs 
universitaires et 18 organisations communautaires réalisera des entrevues 
auprès de 600 Montréalais et de Montréalaises déplacées soit par l’Holocauste, 
soit par d’autres crimes de masse survenus au Rwanda, au Cambodge, en Amérique 
latine, en Haïti, ou en Asie du Sud. Ces entrevues numérisées seront ensuite 
rendues disponibles aux chercheurs et aux publique. 

Le projet est administré par le Centre d’histoire orale et de récits numérisés 
associé au département d’histoire de l’Université Concordia. Il dispose 
d’équipements d’enregistrement, de postes informatiques, d’un studio d’entrevue 
insonorisé, ainsi que d’une salle de conférence multimédia. Tous ces 
équipements seront sous la surveillance du coordonnateur ou de la 
coordonnatrice de projet qui, pour sa part, disposera d’un bureau situé au 
département d’histoire de l’Université Concordia. 

LA DESCRIPTION DU POSTE : 
Nous sommes actuellement à la recherche d’un coordonnateur ou d’une 
coordonnatrice de projet qui, sous la direction du Comité de coordination et du 
Dr. Steven High, supervisera les activités et l’administration quotidiennes du 
projet Histoires de vie. 

La personne retenue devra pouvoir répondre aux demandes d’information, en 
Anglais et en Français, ainsi que s’occuper des communications externes et 
internes relatives au projet. Elle veillera à la gestion des équipements et des 
installations, et devra superviser des stagiaires et des assistants de 
recherche. De plus, elle devra administrer la base de données qui sera mise sur 
pied afin de répertorier les entrevues réalisées. 

Le contrat sera renouvelable sur une base annuelle, le salaire variant selon 
l’expérience du candidat ou de la candidate sélectionnée. 

TÂCHES :

1.	Coordonner et maintenir les liens de communication entre les membres du 
projet Histoires de vie;
2.	Maintenir les dossiers administratifs à jour et assurer le suivi des 
projets de recherche et des comités de travail;
3.	Agir à titre de secrétaire lors des réunions du Comité de coordination 
et des comités de travail et rédiger les procès-verbaux; coordonner les 
conférences téléphoniques et les réunions ponctuelles; 
4.	Appuyer les activités de recherche des partenaires communautaires 
associés au projet afin qu’ils atteignent leurs objectifs de travail; 
5.	Organiser et animer les ateliers de formation offerts par le projet;
6.	Préparer le matériel de formation devant servir lors des ateliers de 
formation et des réunions;
7.	Assurer un travail de suivi auprès des médias et mettre à jour le 
dossier de presse;
8.	Veiller aux règlements et aux procédures régissant le Comité de 
coordination et les comités de travail du projet; 
9.	Assurer la mise à jour des informations financières relatives au projet 
et les rendre accessibles aux membres du Comité de coordination et aux 
partenaires du projet; 
10.	Préparer et distribuer les procès-verbaux pour les membres du Comité de 
coordination;
11.	Participer à la préparation des rapports provisoires et annuels requis 
par le CRSH;
12.	Toute autre fonction pouvant être requise par le Comité de coordination.

COMPÉTENCES :
Le candidat ou la candidate recherchée possédera les compétences suivantes. Il 
ou elle devra :

•	Être couramment bilingue (Français et Anglais), à l’oral et à l’écrit;
•	Démontrer la capacité d’établir des priorités, de déléguer des 
responsabilités et de travailler en équipe afin de mener un projet d’envergure 
à terme;
•	Être diplômé dans un domaine connexe ou détenteur d’une expérience 
considérable auprès des communautés culturelles et des réfugiés montréalais;
•	Démontrer une très bonne capacité de rédaction, de synthèse, 
d’interprétation, et de communication afin de faire acheminer des informations 
dans de très brefs délais;
•	Pouvoir mener des entrevues formelles et animer des ateliers et des 
réunions (un atout);
•	Être citoyen canadien ou avoir le statut d’immigrante reçue.
