IFA Workplace learning Bursary in Historic Buildings Survey, Research and Archaeology
Hosted by: Peterborough Cathedral (in partnership with Peterborough City Council and Oxford
Archaeology)
Start Date: February 2008
Duration: 12 months full-time
Salary: £16,621 (£17,120 from April 2008)
Applications are invited for an HLF-funded IFA Workplace Learning Bursary at Peterborough
Cathedral in the field of buildings archaeology under the supervision of Dr Jackie Hall, Cathedral
Archaeologist.
This is a project-based placement, and the successful candidate will gain valuable skills working
on a new survey, archival research and the creation of a GIS for the historic precincts of
Peterborough Cathedral. This is an excellent opportunity to gain training in many aspects of
buildings archaeology including digital survey, documentary research, understanding buildings
within the wider historic landscape and the use of GIS as both a research and management tool.
Additionally, by working on a single project with a large contracting unit (Oxford Archaeology), an
archaeological consultant (the Cathedral Archaeologist) and a council-based HER officer, the
successful candidate will develop a wide understanding of professional archaeology in England, as
well as a deep understanding of a particular archaeological and historical resource. There may
also be an opportunity to work towards a vocational Qualification in Archaeological Practice.
We welcome applications from candidates with a background in archaeology or architectural
history with qualifications to degree level (or equivalent), some field experience and a strong
interest in pursuing a career in buildings archaeology or a related field. Candidates should have
good written and numeracy skills, and good analytical skills. Basic familiarity with one or more
aspects of the project would be an advantage (IT, survey, archives). Good communication and
team skills are also essential. The successful candidate will be based in Peterborough, but travel to
a number of places will be required. Peterborough Cathedral is an equal opportunities employer
and welcomes applications from all sectors of the community.
Closing dates for applications: Thursday 20th December 2007
Interviews will be held on: Thursday January 24th 2008
