John Lindsay raises some important questions for readers of Capital and
Class, and for the subset of that group who are members of the
Conference of Socialist Economists (and thus individual subscribers to
the journal).
At the moment all individual members have unrestricted access to the web
archive of the journal, as do persons affiliated with institutions which
have subscriptions (and have put in place the necessary arrangements for
those accessing the archive from their institutional IT networks).
The only resources available to support C+C's publication of new Marxist
scholarship come from the organisation's income from current membership
and subscriptions.
The CSE executive committee has a clear duty to safeguard the
continuation of this income, and arguably a duty to maximise it.
Particularly in the case of the latter, there might be though to be
limits beyond which the executive should not go, in terms of the kind of
revenue-raising activity undertaken, and even more particularly in
relation to measures which might restrict access to the archive.
Anyone with views on this topic is invited to send them to me for
transmission to the executive committee.
Best wishes,
Julian
