A million thanks for the news of (and link to) the
Harvard MPC project! I've only had time for a quick
look-see so far, but the site seems marvelously
comprehensive.
And you're right about its ability to raise (my) hopes
for at least a record of the oral epic in the history
of our literature, so thanks for that too. After all,
historical record-keeping was a big part of Beowulf's
purpose, as I'm sure you know (thinking of the Fight
at Finnsburg section, e.g.)--which is why Famous
Seamus's changing of the names made a travesty of his
translation, now ensconced in the canon via the Norton
Anthology.
