EPSRC PhD Studentship in Mathematics of Operational Research at University
of Strathclyde, Glasgow
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in any area of Mathematics of
Operational Research, associated with the research in the Department of
Management Science at the University of Strathclyde. The position is funded
by the Mathematics Programme of EPSRC. It is worth £12,600 per year plus
fees for a UK national, or fees-only for an EU-national, and also provides a
training budget. Other nationalities are not eligible. The duration is 3.5
years.
Strathclyde has a lively group working in Mathematics of Operational
Research and Management Science. The department is recognized as one of the
key groups contributing to new theory and industrial practice, and has
active collaborative links with other research groups internationally. The
main areas of mathematical expertise within the department are in risk and
stochastic modelling, decision analysis, simulation and optimization.
Applications of these areas are found across a wide range of business and
government organisations. The department has strong and growing links with
Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics and Mathematics Departments in
Strathclyde in particular through its initiatives in multidisciplinary
collaborations.
Management Science/Operational Research is concerned with business
decision-making. It is seeks to create new systematic approaches to the
analysis of business decision problems including:
• exploring new ways to tackle problems faced by managers
• aiding clarification of objectives and priorities
• defining alternative strategies
• investigating costs and benefits
We are looking for a person with a degree in the mathematical sciences
(maths, stats, OR) or closely related area to work in any of the areas of
mathematical expertise mentioned above. You should have at least a 2.1
degree – preferably a 1st - should be self-motivated and interested in
problem solving. You would join a group of around 20 PhD students, 4
Research Assistants and 12 academic staff. You would have 2 supervisors and
be invited to join mathematical courses, seminars, and our own special
Research Workshops held on the bank of Loch Lomond at the University Ross
Priory Centre.
