Don't get me started Glenn, it's not just the lack of ward cleaners, it's
lack of in-house laundry, lack of changing facilities, Trusts allowing
clinical staff (all grades and disciplines) to go home, and travel to work,
in uniforms (and if that doesn't negate any infection control initiatives I
don't know what does), due to the removal of ward 'day rooms' allowing ward
patients on infusion pumps etc. to go to communal hospital dining areas that
are used by the public, maintenance staff, and 'Uncle Tom Cobbley and
all'........!! Until someone in either Central Government, the DoH, the
NMC, or the RCN makes a stand and starts initiatives to get back to some of
the good old common sense (and in some instances, task orientated) nursing
practices, and also makes a move to reinstate some of the old checks and
balances that did a lot to stop primary and secondary infections we will
never stop the tide of problems that are rife in the NHS at
present............!!!!

Exactly Bob!
I remember when we had our first case of C.Diff, and the cause then was not
only hand-washing but the over-prescribing of antibiotics.
We addressed the hand-washing, and cleaning issue (why wards no longer have
a designated domestic i'll never know) but the mass prescribing of
antibiotics continued, and still does!!
The out-sourcing of cleaning is a now a major factor in this. Reap what is
sown?? Sadly gone are the days of having your own domestic as part of the
team, and if there was a problem (which was very rare) you could simply go
and say "Yvonne, can you just come and ....". What's the chances of that
now??
Very sad, and this is only back in 1997. mmmm, what happened that year, oh
yes, the NHS was saved, we've never had investment like it, we've never
been so well off!! We should be so lucky!!
I feel better now!
Glenn
