dear beryl,
thank you for the kind words...
were in the process of planning a launch event for
CAMP,
so unfortunately not able to participate much in this
key topic!
But, we hope people on this list will follow the
various activities in Mumbai, as they unfold over the
next year and more. A note on the broad sweep of the
proposal: we are hoping that several of these issues,
especially as they intersect on the ground in some of
our own practices and in our city, are meaningful to
look at together rather than in a super-specialist
way... Time will tell.
In this sense, and here is my contribution to this
discussion perhaps,
is the work is Ulises Mejias, who is a network scholar
studying the concept of nearness in networks. I am
particularly attracted to his notion of "paranodality"
and related ideas of neighbouring and exclusion, in
which he says:
"While networks are extremely efficient at
establishing relations between nodes, they embody a
bias against knowledge of—and engagement with—anything
that is not a node in the network."
So, with respect to the network and social reality,
"reality is mediated through a nodocentric filter, and
the distance between the node and something that is
not in the network is—for all practical
purposes—infinite..."
The paranodal offers for him a site of possible
resistance, of being able to say no to the network,
while still being related to it.
More of his work is at:

At one level this may seem like a general pointer to
the importance of "context", or paying attention to
things in between nodes. But I think it leads to very
important questions of what exactly may enter into a
digital environment/ relationship/ contract, and what
is the role of that which is "outside"? I have been
thinking about this, in a somewhat different context,
in terms of "leakage", and also the related
questions: "who may place a node?", or "where may a
node be placed?"
Some related thoughts are here, in an artists
presentation I gave at the Ars Electronica Forums.
Apologies to those who were there and saw it already.
(These are notes, not a formal paper.)

That also links to some of shaina's projects.
Hope to share more work-related ideas here, and our
own experiences of what happens in our "outside", but
right now were in the middle of a bit of a production
:)
more soon,
best,
ashok
