An Exhibition entitled 'Coals to Calder Grove' opens on 15 October until
13 January 2008. It looks back at the story of the Caphouse mineral
railway. Museum opening times may be found at the foot of this email.
There is an accompanying lecture programme. All lectures are free and
start at 14.00 in the Conference Centre at the Museum and will last 45
mins - 1 hour.

Collections Manager, NationalRailway Museum, York
Jim Rees will be talking about his experiences replicating and operating
some of the early locomotives that were used in the North East of
England.

Middleton Colliery Railway - Ian Smith, Heritage Railway Association
Ian Smith will be talking about the history of the Middleton Railway in
Leeds from its opening in 1758 through to the present day. This includes
looking at the work of John Blenkinsop and Matthew Murray before talking
about the work undertaken on the railway today.

The Caphouse Mineral Railway - John Goodchild, John Goodchild
Collection, Wakefield
Local historian John Goodchild will examine the history of the railway
that served Caphouse Colliery. He will look at why the railway was
needed and the effects it had on the collieries it served.

The Bowes Railway - Anthony Coulls, Curator, Locomotion - The National
Railway Museum at Shildon
Anthony Coulls will be talking about the history of the Bowes Railway
near Gateshead. This railway was designed and built by George Stephenson
in 1826 and worked for nearly 150 years. Like the Caphouse Mineral
Railway,the Bowes Railway worked using rope haulage.
