Following a very successful first seminar, ISSES is to hold a
further seminar at Leicester Museum of Technology, Abbey Lane Pumping
Station, Leicester, on Saturday 10th November 2007 starting 10:15 and including refreshments, lunch
and an opportunity to see the large beam engines and other exhibits.
Four lectures will be given with time for questioning.
These will be - The history of sewage works in Leicester with
emphasis on the beam engine pumping station.
A history of engineering models by Ben Russell - curator of engineering at the
Science Museum. This is a coup for ISSES and should be a fascinating
lecture.
The excavation of an early Boulton and Watt beam engine
site in Chester - real archaeology backed up by material from the B& W collection in Birmingham.
Finally, the Chairman of the Cambridge Museum of Technology will present a paper on the Cheddars Lane
Sewage Pumping Station and its Babcock & Wilcox water-tube boilers. Much ingenious work has been undertaken to keep this site in steam
and this should appeal to those of a practical bent.
There is something for everybody here. The cost is a very reasonable
£20 (£2.50 discount before the end of October). Please contact me via ISSES2007 at yahoo dot co dot uk
For further information and I will return to you a PDF of the ISSES advertising flyer.
