(Apologies for cross posting)
Here are details of two fully funded PhD
studentships that are available at King's College
London, UK. I would imagine that Studentship 1
might be most relevant to this list and I would
be very grateful if you could pass on the details
to anyone you think that might be interested.
Successful applicants could choose to formally
begin their studies in January 2008 or September
2008.
many thanks,
jon hindmarsh.
**2 PhD Studentships**
The PHANTOM Project at King's College London
invites applications for 2 PhD studentships
funded by the ESRC's Teaching and Learning
Research Programme
Summary of the project
The overall aim of the PHANTOM project is to
develop and evaluate haptic and synthetic online
devices which will be used by a range of dental
students and dental care professionals to
transform the quality of their learning. Haptics
is the study of human touch and interaction with
the external environment via touch. A common
need is that these students all have to acquire
and improve their skills in treating teeth. The
purpose of the devices will be to enable them to
practice as many times as they like on a very
realistic virtual patient without the worry of
causing harm, embarrassment or fear.
PhD Studentships (3-4 years)
As part of the work of the PHANTOM project we are
seeking to recruit two post-graduates to work on
the following aspects of the project:
Studentship 1: To research the 'sociology of
touch' based in the Department of Management,
School of Social Science and Public Policy.
The purpose of this PhD project will be to
conduct research communication in healthcare
settings in order to:
- generate a body of empirical findings and
conceptual distinctions concerning the practices
and problems associated with communicating manual
skills in training contexts;
- develop and assess video-based field methods
for the study of touch in training contexts;
- produce recommendations for the design and
deployment of advanced simulators and
technologies to support interaction and
co-participation in training.
***Informal enquiries are encouraged and should
be addressed to Dr Jon Hindmarsh,
[log in to unmask], Tel: 020 7848 4194, who
will be one of the supervisors. Formal
applications should be directed to

Studentship 2: To research the use of phantom
fingers in dental education, based in the Centre
for Flexible Learning in Dental Education.
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the
impact of the PHANTOM project's haptic devices on
different cohorts of dental students. It will
draw on the socio-cognitive and haptic device
co-research expertise in the PHANTOM project.
Manual dexterity training using a 'phantom
fingers' haptic device accelerates and enhances
students' performance and perceptions of basic
dental techniques and skills such as removal of
calculus from teeth. The purpose of this PhD
project will be to:
- assist in the design of the 'phantom fingers'
jig as a human interface device to the web
- support the development of a web-based haptics
training environment to control and graphically
represent the training scenarios.
- assess the impact on student learning of
removing calculus using the 'phantom-fingers'
compared to a traditionally methods using
polyfiller on manikins.
- draw conclusions about future development of
the 'phantom-fingers' in dental training.
Informal enquiries should be addressed to either
Professor Patricia Reynolds (after November 1st),
[log in to unmask], Tel: 020 7848 1373 who
will be one of the supervisors and is Director of
the Centre, or Professor Tim Newton,
[log in to unmask], Tel: 020 3299 3481. Formal
applications should be directed to

These studentships funded by the ESRC/EPSRC/JISC,
which are immediately available for suitably
qualified UK or EU students, include full payment
of fees and a 3-4 year maintenance grant
(depending upon previous qualifications)
(currently in the region of £14,600 tax-free per
annum). Applications are invited from committed,
analytical and highly observant individuals, who
have a 1st class or upper 2nd class honours
degree, or masters in E-learning, IT/Web-based
development, organisational behaviour, sociology
or a related discipline.
Further information about the PHANTOM project is
available on the ESRC/TLRP Website
(http://www.tlrp.org/proj/tel/tel_cox.html)
The studentships are available from Autumn 2007
and students could officially begin in January
2008 or September 2008. Applicants should apply
by completing an online application form
available at www.kcl.ac.uk/pg/apply/
Closing date for applications: November 14th 2007.
