Dear Colleagues,

Changing the Way People Buy and Sell, Sheffield, 15th November

The Centre of Sustainable Consumption at Sheffield Hallam University in collaboration
with Cardiff University and Swansea University is hosting a seminar, Changing the Way
People Buy and Sell, as part of the ESRC-funded Forecasts and Scenarios for a More
Sustainable Society seminar series. The series aims to provide policy makers,
business, consumers and other stakeholders with ideas about what the future may hold
if, individually and collectively, we choose to follow new and different approaches
to
achieving more sustainable consumption and production.

Current behaviour patterns are based on outdated and unsustainable models of
production and consumption; they assume that consumers will buy ever more products
and they focus on the image and status that products offer rather than their
functionality and durability. Alternatives are being developed, but they are often at
an early stage of development. This seminar explores the potential of some of these
new models and evaluates their potential benefits for producers and consumers.

The seminar is a one day event from 10am to 5pm and includes an excellent range of
presentations. Confirmed speakers include Julia Hailes, author of "The New Green
Consumer Guide", Ren Reynolds (Writer, philosopher and consultant) on The Virtual
Consumer, Dr. Andrew Fearne (Director of the Centre for Supply Chain Research,
University of Kent) on Understanding Consumer Behaviour, Dr. Caroline Bekin (Brunel
University) on New Consumption Communities and Ethical Spaces and Dr. Molly Scott
Cato (University of Wales institute Cardiff) on Branding Local Towns. In addition to
presentations, there will be a group session to discuss key issues, address the
challenges and develop scenarios for sustainable consumption and production.

A copy of the seminar brochure is attached for further information about the seminar
series. There is no charge for attending the seminar and travel reimbursements may be
claimed.

We look forward to your participation.

Kind regards
Kenisha
