CONFERENCES & WORKSHOPS
*****************************
Formal models of linguistic diversity
12-Oct-2007 - 13-Oct-2007
Trieste, Italy
The workshop, jointly held as the result of a cooperation project by the
Universities of Utrecht, Trieste and Verona, seeks to offer the opportunity for
scholars in different branches of linguistics to meet and discuss some of the
most recent developments and research trends concerning the study of linguistic
diversity in space and time, with the aim of fostering an innovative and
productive collaboration.
The workshop is meant to address some of the key problems of theoretical
linguistics, crosscutting the synchronic and diachronic dimensions, such as the
nature of linguistic variation, the validity of parametric approaches and the
possible alternatives, the application of biological models to the study of
language evolution, language transmission and language classification, the role
of acquisitional mechanisms in language change, the computational modeling of
linguistic diversity, the interplay between different modules of linguistic
knowledge in creating the space of linguistic variation.

Ph.D. Studentship in Phonetics at Stockholm University, Sweden
The Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University invites applications for
a four-year studentship within its Ph.D. programme in Phonetics (starting date:
January 2008).
Applicants are requested to acquaint themselves with the research profile of
the Phonetics section at http://www.ling.su.se/fon/ to sure make that it fits
with their own research interests.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree including an equivalent of the
Swedish "magister" programme in Phonetics. This programme focuses on phonetic
theory and comprises two years of study including the writing of two research
papers. Applicants from all countries are welcome. Knowledge of Swedish is
not a formal requirement but students are strongly advised to acquire a working
knowledge of Swedish as soon as possible (language courses are offered by the
university).
During the period of the studentship, the student is a regular employee of the
University. The beginning salary is SEK 19400 a month (approximately 2070 or
USD2850).
The first period of employment is for one year. The employment contract can
then be renewed for at most two years at a time, up to a total of four years,
or, if the student accepts teaching or administrative duties at the department
(which must not exceed 20 per cent of full time), maximally five years.
The deadline for applications is October 15, 2007. Applications should be sent
by ordinary post to Stockholms universitet, Registrator/PA, 106 91 Stockholm,

Cognitive Science of Language
The Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University
invites applications for a tenure-track appointment, effective July

Preference will be given to applicants qualified to teach in the
field of the cognitive science of language broadly defined. The
current minimum salary at the rank of Associate Professor is
$71,118.00.
The Department has launched a successful undergraduate program in
Linguistic Cognitive Science, drawing on existing strengths in second
language acquisition and bilingualism, cognitive linguistics,
clinical sociolinguistics, phonology, computational text analysis and
psycholinguistics. We expect that this appointment will help anchor
and develop the newly proposed MSc/PhD in the Cognitive Science of
Language, an interdisciplinary program which draws faculty from the
Faculties of Humanities, Science, Health Science and Engineering, and
will help build relationships with the community of clinicians, both
in medicine and speech and language pathology.
Qualifications should include a PhD. in Linguistics, Cognitive
Science or closely related field, demonstrated ability to teach at
both the undergraduate and graduate level, and an established record
of scholarly research. The successful candidate will normally teach
five one-term courses in an academic year and participate in the
research and administrative activities of the department.
Administrative expertise an asset.
