Subject: RDS: Impact of the South Asian Earthquake on Disabled People
Dear all,
This essay published in the recent issue of RDS may have been seen by
some
of the more clued-in and informed readers on the list, but still wanted
to
draw your attention and hopefully comments/remarks on the issue of
disability and disaster response.
This was an outcome of a very strategic engagement aimed at influencing
the
National Disaster Management Bill, since then an Act, to accommodate
concerns of vulnerable social groups. That did not happen.
But the fight does not stop at this. As law or no law the needs of a
targeted approach, and also an informed post disaster rehabilitation
process, will be raised again and again in a diverse geographical
country
like India. Needless to say, also the general lack of representation of
disability related agenda in the political discourse and policy making
will
keep getting highlighted is sharper and sharper tone.
Warm regards
Parvinder Singh
