PhD Studentship - Improving Computer Interactions for Older Adults
School of Systems Engineering, University of Reading, UK

A PhD studentship is available in the area of improving human-computer
interaction (HCI) for older people. The popularisation of graphical user
interfaces has meant that pointing and selecting targets (e.g. icons, menu
items) has become an integral part of interacting with computers. However,
older adults often have difficulties with using pointing devices,
highlighting this as an area in which new developments are needed and in
which improvements could have a substantial impact on the overall ease and
effectiveness of computer use for older people.

The scholarship will support a Ph.D. student to investigate techniques to
facilitate pointing at targets in graphical user interfaces for older
people. The research will benefit from extensive involvement from older
people, and the candidate will design and evaluate novel techniques through
user trials with older and younger computer users.

Further details may be obtained from Dr. Faustina Hwang
([log in to unmask]).

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT:
The PhD student will be a member of the Interactive Systems (IS) Research
Group. The unifying theme to IS research is the study of systems that
require ‘humans-in-the-loop'. Other active research areas within the group
include medical and rehabilitation technologies and interactive simulation
(including virtual environments, intelligent human computer interfaces and
telepresence).

APPLICANT'S PROFILE:
Applicants should have a first degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or
other HCI-related discipline, have a working knowledge of programming in
languages such as C++ and be proficient in data analysis. Applicants should
also have an interest in working with older people.

FUNDING:
This studentship covers both academic fees (£3240 for UK and EU students)
and subsistence (£12,600) for a total of £15,840 per annum for three years.
Additional academic fees for overseas students are not covered.

APPLICATIONS:
Application forms are available in pdf and Word/RTF format by downloading
from http://www.sse.rdg.ac.uk/prospective_students/postgraduate.htm or by
emailing Ms Claire Evans ([log in to unmask]).

Applications should include a completed application form, two sealed
reference letters, copies of academic transcripts and degree certificates,
and an English certificate if English is not your first language. All the
application documents should be sent, quoting Reference CE1510, to the
following address:
