– CALL FOR PAPERS / ALTERNATIVE IDENTITIES –
submission deadline December 1, 2007
SARGASSO, a Journal of Caribbean Literature, Language, and Culture is
accepting submissions for an upcoming issue with the preliminary title
"Alternative Identities: Belonging and Resistance."
Identities that reveal or otherwise represent alternatives engage and
reflect the potential redefinition of the contexts in which they exist.
This issue of Sargasso will explore how alternative identities are imagined
and put to use in Caribbean literary, artistic, linguistic, and social
texts. Essays might explore tensions between understandings of identity as
static and predictable (the idea that they are what people “are” or
“possess”) and assertions that individuals and groups strategically relate
to, recreate, and / or situate their identities. Of special interest is
work that attends closely to the ways in which contemporary identities and
ways of belonging relate to resistance.
The editorial committee invites contributions that creatively interpret
“alternative identities.” Possible themes include, but are not limited to:
• Processes of subjectification as they relate to colonization,
postcolonialism, protest, & freedom
• Reinventions of communal practices that engage & sustain local
knowledges & traditions
• Reformulations of & reactions to carnival, masquerade, & tourism
• Linguistic & musical interpretations of urbanity, youth, & cultural
nationalism
• Redefinitions of Africa, marginality, & enslavement as markers of
identity
• Shifts in & challenges to understandings of movement, migration,
citizenship, & nation
• Responses to dominant interpretations of criminality, incarceration, &
masculinity
• Critiques of objectivist categories related to illness, gender,
sexuality, & transexuality
• Reinterpretations of Indo-Caribbean culture, history, & social
practice
• Reflections of aesthetic & stylistic choices in language, music, &
social commentary

less should accompany essays. B & W photos and illustrations can be
