Designing Tangibles for Learning: An Empirical Investigation This EPSRC funded project is an interdisciplinary project between social science (IoE) and computer science (Birkbeck) based at the London Knowledge Lab. The research will involve a systematic investigation into understanding the value of tangible technologies for supporting learning. More specifically it will investigate how different ways of linking together objects, environments and information affect the way that learners interact with and understand scientific ideas. The project will involve the development of tangible artefacts and representations designed to support students' science learning, together with a series of empirical studies designed to explore the impact of different design variables on interaction and cognition, and to provide an explanation of how the different artefact-representation relationships support different kinds of learning.
Research Officer (Grade 7) - Ref: 7AC-CPMST-4425
Salary in the range £27,466 - £29,139 plus £2,323 London Allowance Job Share Considered - Available from 01.01.2008 until 30.12.2009 Appointment subject to satisfactory CRB Disclosure
You will play a vital role in the project's educational objectives reporting to the Principle Investigator. You will liaise with schools and work collaboratively with teachers and domain experts, design and develop empirical studies, collect data and assist with data analysis and report writing. You will have a familiarity of the role of representation for learning and/or with the potential of computers for learning, in the area of scientific education at primary or secondary level. A first degree in social science (e.g. psychology, education, cognitive science) is essential. You should also have or be studying for a higher degree in an area of social science that relates to learning, computing, science or combinations of these. The ability to work in a team and write clearly and concisely in academic English will also be essential for this role. Experience of iterative design, data collection, qualitative and quantitative data analysis is also required.
Research Officer (Grade 8) - Ref: 8AC-CPMST-4426
Salary up to £33,779 plus £2,323 London Allowance Job Share Considered - Available from 01.01.2008 until 30.09.2009 Appointment subject to satisfactory CRB Disclosure
You will lead the project's technological implementation in support of its research objectives reporting to the Principle Investigator. You will work with other members of the research team to develop application scenarios, collect requirements and produce mock-ups. You will design and develop software to support the selected tangible interfaces integrated into complete demonstrator systems including related digital representations. You will have an appreciation for the potential of computers for learning, in the area of scientific education. A first degree in science or engineering (e.g. computing, physics, electrical engineering) is essential. You should also have or be studying for a higher degree in an area of computing that relates to pervasive computing, sensor networks, tangibles or combinations of these. The ability to work in a team and write clearly and concisely in academic English will also be essential for this role. Experience in advanced software development, iterative design, and supporting system operations is also required.
