CALL FOR PAPERS
==================================
HCIEd 2008: ARCHITECTING THE FUTURE
Rome, Italy: 2 - 4 April 2008
==================================
HCIEd 2008 is the annual international conference of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) educators. It will be held in Rome, Italy from 2 to 4 of April 2008 (just before the CHI2008 Conference in Florence). HCIEd 2008 is run under the auspices of IFIP WG 13.1 on Education in HCI and the HCI Curriculum and the BCS HCI Group, with the support of IaD School of Tor Vergata University in Rome and of the CNR, Instituto di psicologia in Rome and the endorsement of the SIGCHI Italy.
SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE
---------------------------------------------
HCIEd 2008 aims at promoting a discussion on the evolution of HCI education towards a more holistic vision requiring a stronger dialogue between a variety of disciplines. This is in reaction to the demand of new curricula to equip practitioners and designers of the future with the necessary skills to cope with developments in, amongst others, mediated communication that is increasingly becoming ubiquitous, embedded and 'wearable' and tends to be part of complex interactive systems that populate co-evolving spaces.
It became evident from discussions at HCIEd 2006 and HCIEd 2007 that future HCI education cannot avoid developing within interdisciplinary learning environments, capturing the lessons learned in traditional design schools, stimulating creative innovation as a form of social activity, whilst at the same time focusing on developing systems meeting the guidelines and principles of human-centred design. The main focuses of HCIEd 2006 and HCIEd 2007 have been on inventivity and creativity. Several experiences, best practices, tools and methods have been presented, compared and critically discussed. Some reflections and very preliminary drafts of systematisation of the way in which the design process may be taught have been proposed. While we wish, as a community, to continue our exploration of methodologies, tools, best practices and to investigate solutions to issues that are still unanswered, we also would like to move a step forward and have an in-depth reflection on the required foundations of future HCI education. We wish to enrich and integrate our knowledge of the design processes that are used in the various design domains (process control, consumer electronics, architecture, product design, fashion design, software engineering, etc.), by peeling away the domain specifics, identifying what is universal and what is different, and what common methods and tools can be identified. We would like to investigate how to better handle and integrate the border conditions impacting on our domain (educational policies, social environments, political issues, ethics and acceptability, role of industry, etc.) and the influence of cross-cultural issues. We would like to critically compare learning contexts. We thus aim to discuss 'Architecting the Future' of the HCI and interaction and experience design education.
We therefore invite educators, researchers, designers and developers from a variety of domains to attend and take part in HCIEd 2008: computer and information scientists, engineers, product, graphic and interaction designers, architects, social scientists, ethnographers and anthropologists, etc.
HISTORY OF THE HCIEd CONFERENCE
---------------------------------------------
In 2001 the British Computer Society (BCS) HCI Group started a series of informal workshops amongst HCI educators. Parallel to this IFIP WG 13.1 started with a similar series of annual HCI education workshops at the INTERACT Conference in Edinburgh in 1999. In 2006 the two groups decided to start joint workshops on a more international level and joined hands with the Interaction Design Centre of the University of Limerick and the CONVIVIO network to organise HCIEd 2006 in Limerick, Ireland. In 2006 the event was co-organized in Aveiro, Portugal by IEETA - Instituto de Engenharia Electrónica e Telemática de Aveiro. In 2008 the event is being co-organized by the ISIM_garage (Interactive and Multimodal Interfaces and Systems), a laboratory associated to the IaD School (the e-learning
centre) of the University of Tor Vergata.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
---------------------------------------------
Apart from attending, there are two ways to take part in HCIEd 2008: by submitting a full or a short paper to the conference or by taking part in the student design contest.
PAPER CATEGORY
---------------------------------------------
HCIEd 2008 will accept two categories of papers: full papers and short papers. All papers will be subjected to a double-blind peer-review process.
Paper Themes:
---------------------------------------------
Full papers should focus on the scope of the conference as described above and could address issues related to the foundations of future HCI education, evaluating current practices or curricula in the context of the changing nature of HCI education, universal and different design issues and processes and their possible impact on future HCI education, issues related to the border conditions impacting on HCI education, etc.
Short papers can be based on case studies or reports of best practices that may contribute to architecting the future of the HCI education. These may also report meaningful experiments or techniques in a concise format.
HCIEd 2008 welcomes original contributions from the following (but not limited to) broad themes:
- Theoretical foundations of HCI, interaction design and experience design
education: reflecting on current or future contexts.
- Studies of the design process in the context of architecting future HCI, interaction design or experience design education.
- Critical reflections about the influences of border conditions on HCI, interaction design and experience design education.
- Comparative critical studies on curricula planning and management. - Exploration of cross-cultural issues that may affect the future education of HCI, interaction design and experience design.
- Best practices and systematisations of methods for teaching HCI, interaction design and experience design.
- Proposal for new enabling tools for the teaching of HCI, interaction design and experience design.
Paper Benefit Statement
---------------------------------------------
In all cases, a paper must break new ground and its contribution must offer a clear benefit. Authors should develop a 30-word statement of contribution/benefits related to the papers they submit. This statement will be used by reviewers to understand aim and details of their paper's contribution and will be published in the conference programme.
Paper Format
---------------------------------------------
All submissions should follow the ACM format strictly:
http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html
Full research papers must be no longer than 8 pages in the prescribed format and short papers (posters) no longer than 4 pages, including all the additional materials such as references, appendices, and pictures.
Full research papers must include a title, sufficient space for the author names, contact information and affiliations, abstract, keywords, body, and references. The abstract must be no longer than 150 words and must be included in the paper; it must clearly state the paper's contribution to the conference themes. All references must be complete, accurate and accessible to the public, formatted in the prescribed ACM format style.
Paper Submission Process
---------------------------------------------
Contributions to all the categories will be electronically submitted following a procedure to be posted on the conference website:
http://www.mifav.uniroma2.it/hcied2008/.
Submission deadline: 20 December 2007.
Conference Proceedings
---------------------------------------------
Two versions of the conference proceedings will be published. All full papers and short papers accepted for the conference will be published in the conference pre-proceedings by Tor Vergata University of Rome - IaD School as a special issue of the IxD&A Journal. A selected number of research papers among those presented at the conference are expected to be critically revised and extended by the authors after the conference and will be published in a volume of the Springer IFIP Series titled 'HCI
Education: Architecting the Future'.
ON-LINE STUDENT EXPERIENCE-DESIGN CONTEST
---------------------------------------------
The main users of the education process are our students and thus it seems unreasonable not to involve them in HCIEd 2008. To accomplish this we decided to create an on-line international interaction design contest for students. The contest aims not only to select the best design proposals stimulated by the design brief of the contest, but also to identify the best design proposals resulting from the use of best practices, methods, tools and process within a collaborative international and cross-cultural environment.
Participation in the HCIEd 2008 International Experience-design Contest is free and it is open to bachelor, master and PhD level students.
Details on how to apply will be available soon on the conference website:
http://www.mifav.uniroma2.it/hcied2008/.
Successful applicants will be admitted to the on-line learning environment LIFE where they will found the design brief of the HCIEd 2008 contest. The main theme will be devoted to 'The Design of Liquid Places'. Throughout the duration of the contest the students will be assisted by expert tutors.
A selected number of students will be invited to Rome where they will have the opportunity to attend HCIEd 2008 for free, present their results and have a description of their project published in the conference pre-proceedings. Students will however be expected to pay their own travel and subsistence costs.
Deadline for application to the student design contest: 30 November 2007.
