From Kabul to Kandahar, 1833-1933
A Royal Geographical Society travelling display, at Surrey History Centre,
30 Oct to 1 Dec 2007
Surrey History Centre is pleased to announce that this engaging and
informative display from the Royal Geographical Society is coming to Woking
as part of its 'People, Places, Landscapes' events programme. The
travelling version of this major highly successful exhibition held at the
Royal Geographical Society in London earlier this year will be on display
at the Centre in Goldsworth Road, Woking, from 30 October to the 1 December
2007.
The display panels feature breathtaking scenes ranging from Kabul's market
places in 1842, to panoramic views of Kandahar taken after the second
Anglo-Afghan war of 1878-80. These evocative images, by artists and pioneer
photographers such as B Simpson and R B Holmes, are a rare sight having
been largely unseen until now and never before seen in Surrey.
The images of this mountainous country provide a revealing insight into the
communities, customs and histories of the Afghanistan region. The Royal
Geographical Society's Afghanistan collection includes hundreds of
beautiful images dating back to the mid-1800s, whilst thirteen thousand
items relate to India and Pakistan. A selection of these photographs and
lithographs, accompanied by extracts from historic travel journals and
maps, feature in this fascinating exhibition.
Sara Wajid, the co-curator of the exhibition and renowned journalist and
cultural writer will be giving a talk about her research for the project on
Saturday 24 November at Surrey History Centre, tickets £2.50, booking
essential. See the website for further details
