Dear all
There are still a few places left on the following visit, organised by
Archives for London [AfL].
Visit to The Royal College of Surgeons of England on Wednesday the 14th
November at 2.00pm.
Cost: £5
The Royal College of Surgeons of England has been collecting manuscripts
since 1799, when it acquired the Hunter collection of specimens, books and
papers. Since that time it has, by gift, purchase and bequest, acquired an
extensive collection of manuscripts relating to medicine and surgery from
the 16th to the 20th centuries, these include case books, a comprehensive
collection of lecture notes from the 18th century onwards containing those
from the lectures of William Hunter, John Hunter, Astley Cooper and John
Abernethy, correspondence collections which include the Hunter-Baillie
collection of over 1,000 letters in ten volumes of the Arbuthnot, Hunter,
Baillie and Denman families. This collection comprises letters of many of
the most prominent members of society of the day, including members of the
Royal family (whom Matthew Baillie treated). The manuscript collections
also contain a number of diaries. Some are personal, some professional,
such as the operation diaries of Sir John Bland-Sutton and the museum
diaries of William Clift. There are also number of collections relating to
war medicine, particularly the First and Second World Wars.
Join the Archivist for a talk on the history of the College and its
historical collections. Get an opportunity to look at the Library display
cases, and see examples from the archives and manuscript collections. You
will also get the opportunity to visit to the Hunterian Museum.
