PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE AND SPEAKER

Large Lecture Theatre,
Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit,
Chaucer Road, Cambridge
The use of research and statistics in local government
Julia Gumy
Cambridgeshire County Council
Abstract:
Cambridgeshire is one of the fastest growing areas in England. Even though
development puts pressure on the environment and infrastructure it can
also be a source of jobs, homes, transport and landscapes.
It is important for local government to identify shortfalls and
opportunities in order to inform service planning. In the long-term this
can improve the quality of life of people living in Cambridgeshire. By
taking the Research Group of the Cambridgeshire County Council as an example,
this speech will provide an overview of what research can be undertaken
by a local authority. Moreover, it will illustrate how a local authority
collects data, produces statistics and disseminates statistical
information to stakeholders or members of the public. The speech will
cover the areas and methodologies used to provide a comprehensive
research and intelligence service for the Council and its partners.
Speaker:
Julia Gumy is a Population Research Officer at the Research Group of
the Cambridgeshire County Council. She graduated in 2003 in Economics
from the University of Salamanca in Spain. After completing her studies
she worked as a consultant dealing with European projects and programmes
in Brussels and as an analyst in the Wholesale and Investment Banking
department of the BBVA bank in Madrid. In 2006 she obtained a postgraduate
degree in Social Policy Analysis from the University of Leuven in Belgium
and CEPS/INSTEAD in Luxembourg. Her main research interests lie in the
statistical analysis of large, complex datasets such as the European
Community Household Panel and the study of consumer indebtedness and
poverty in Europe.
