Management Briefings
Aslib is running a series of management briefings, exploring some of the issues
that today's library/ information service manager faces. These briefings will
provide an opportunity to hear ideas from and discuss these as well as network
in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Topics currently planned are:
Managing Information Services in takeovers/mergers
(31 October 2007, 4pm-6pm)
This session will give managers more confidence to cope with the impact of major
changes in their organisation’s governance. It will look at practical ways in
which they can keep a high profile in change management, while understanding the
need to lead, motivate and communicate. There will be a chance to share learning
from real experiences of takeovers and mergers in the public and private
sectors, and gather some tips and techniques for dealing with change of this
magnitude.
Moving to information roles between sectors (14 November 2007, 4pm-6pm)
This session will encourage information workers to reconsider their portfolios
of transferable skills, and articulate them to suit roles in different sectors.
It will look at areas most likely to be unfamiliar across different
environments, and offer advice on how to benefit from the “honeymoon period” on
arriving in a role in a new sector, by asking the right questions and meeting
the right people. There will be a chance to share learning from real experiences
of people who have changed sectors, and to gather some tips and techniques to
gain the confidence to cross boundaries.
Making an impact on the Board and raising the profile of Information in your
organisation (24 January 2008, 4pm-6pm)
This session will offer ideas on how information managers can catch the
attention of the Board, and get recognition for the value of their service’s
contribution to organisational objectives. It will look at methods of
identifying people with whom to collaborate, and dealing with areas where there
may be conflict. There will be a chance to share learning from real experiences
of winning resource for information services, and to gather some tips and
techniques for ensuring they have a genuine and visible impact on organisational
performance.
Building a new team (date to be confirmed)
This session will concentrate on the need to match implementation needs to
strategic direction, and working the organisation to build an information team
that can deliver. It will look at ideal and actual scenarios which may be
presented, and offer ideas for identifying opportunities to build a team to meet
internal and external requirements and limitations. There will be a chance to
share learning from real experiences of setting up teams from scratch and
following restructuring, and to gather some tips and techniques for using a
variety of opportunities to meet expectations at the same time as establishing a
team.
