Dear All,
We have been asked by Shared Intelligence to help organise a small focus
group (ideally with 2 or 3 practitioners from each domain in London) as
part of a study they are doing for the MLA on the improvement and
modernisation tools that are available to practitioners in museums,
libraries and archives.
The attached letter explains its purpose and we invite anyone who could
feel they could make a useful contribution - for instance:
* someone involved with Performance benchmarking for public
libraries
* a Curator with recent experience of Accreditation
* an Archivist directly involved with TNA's standards work.
The groups will be informal, lasting about one and a half hours.
It will be held at 2pm on Tuesday 23rd October at the Shared
Intelligence offices in 1 Fitzroy Square, London, W1T 5HE. The nearest
tube station is Warren Street, on the Northern and Victoria line. I have
attached a map for your convenience.
Please contact John Houghton at Shared Intelligence directly to confirm
your attendance and contact John with any questions or queries.

Dear colleague,
MLA Modernisation and Improvement Tools Project - background
Shared Intelligence has been commissioned by the Museums, Libraries and
Archives Council (MLA) to undertake a study of the range of improvement
and modernisation tools available throughout the sector.
The purpose of the study is to map and analyse how the tools available
to practitioners - such as Inspiring Learning for All, The Accreditation
Standard for Museums, the Library Services Peer Review Benchmark and the
National Archive Standards - are used, establish a baseline of
practitioner's awareness and understanding of the tools and explore how
they can be developed in future.
The research will inform thinking on how to develop the sector in the
future, within the context of shared services improvement activity, and
ensure that it maximises its impact on the future delivery of improved
museum, library and archive services.
As part of the scoping research, we would like to invite you to an
informal practitioner focus group. The focus group is intended to
provide an opportunity to discuss your perceptions of the modernisation
and improvement agenda and your views on the available tools as part of
the agenda.
We are also conducting interviews and a national survey of practitioners
and developing detailed case studies of how the tools have been used in
specific contexts.
I hope that you will be able to attend the group as your views are very
important to the research and will feed into the subsequent research. It
will also provide you with an opportunity to share experiences with
others working in the sector in different parts of the country.
