As a follow-on to the message regarding the new OCLC Report "Sharing,
Privacy and Trust in a Networked World", I would also like to bring to
the attention of the list-serv, the following invitation:
Who's Watching Your Space
The OCLC Symposium
Online Information Show, Kensington Olympia, London
Wednesday 5th December, 2-5 pm
OCLC is to hold its first international symposium during the Online
Information Show in London. Based on its newly-published international
research study, the symposium will explore social spaces online, and
where the library fits in a Web 2.0 world. The event is free to attend
and pre-registration is required for the event and the Online
Information exhibition is required.
The event is aimed at senior decision-makers and influencers in the
academic, public and special library sectors.
Why you should attend:
* We have a panel of eminent speakers offering their own unique
perspective on the networking space, including John Naughton, columnist
for The Observer and Cathy de Rosa, the author of the report.
* You will be amongst the first to find out about the findings
from the new OCLC membership report. The first 20 registrants will get
a free copy at the event.
* And, we will be celebrating this first international symposium
with a reception at the end.
As space is limited for this event, pre-registration is required. If you
would like to attend this event then please go to:
www.oclc.org/londononline/ to register and find out more.

_Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World_
[ http://www.oclc.org/reports/sharing/ ]
The practice of using a social network to establish and enhance
relationships based on some common ground-shared interests, related
skills, or a common geographic location-is as old as human societies,
but social networking has flourished due to the ease of connecting on
the Web. This OCLC membership report explores this web of social
participation and cooperation on the Internet and how it may impact the
library*s role, including:
The use of social networking, social media, commercial and library
services on the Web How and what users and librarians share on the Web
and their attitudes toward related privacy issues Opinions on privacy
online
Libraries* current and future roles in social networking
The report is based on a survey (by Harris Interactive on behalf of
OCLC) of the general public from six countries-Canada, France, Germany,
Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States-and of library directors
from the U.S. The research provides insights into the values and
social-networking habits of library users.
Print copies of the report will be available for order on Monday,
October 29.
