italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Hi,
I think VI. 1 is a good candidate, being a story within a story: 'Un cavalier dice a madonna Oretta di portarla con una novella: e, mal compostamente dicendola, e' da lei pregato che a pie' la ponga' (in this case an object lesson in how NOT to tell a story; cf. VI.10 where Fra Cipolla, thinking on his feet, has an apparently successful outcome with his clever story).
In fact the whole of Day VI is a mise-en-abyme, in that the day's stories are all dedicated to the use of language to avoid loss or danger or contempt ('Incomincia la sesta [giornata], nella quale [...] si ragiona di chi con alcun leggiadro motto, tentato, si riscotesse, o con pronta risposta o avvedimento fuggi' perdita o pericolo o scorno').
Possible also to view the collection as a whole a mise-en-abyme with its interaction of frame-story ('cornice') and novelle.
Hope this helps. Best wishes, Paul

Can anybody tell me the number and title of the story in Boccaccio's DECAMERON that constitutes the mise-en-abyme?
Thanks everybody, Paula

italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies Dear italian-studies colleagues,
Please remember to avoid the following when sending messages to the list:
1) including attachments (use references to web sites, or include the plain text, if it is not overly lengthy, within the message itself. This is due to a number of technical factors (extremely boring but very real, I can assure you).
2) writing about anything, regardless of how important, that has nothing to do with providing scholarly information of interest to those working in the field of Italian studies. It's better to make reference to important, non-Italian-studies matters, in private communication; or, if you are utterly determined to send the message to the list (I can't stop you -- I don't censor the messages before they are distributed, and you are all adults), why not at least 'dress up' the message by inviting people to use the material in teaching Italian, and perhaps discuss the linguistic and pedagogical benefits of such a task?
As they say: 'if in doubt, don't' (or, as they don't say, if you have any questions about such matters, please send me a message and I'll be happy to advise you).
Best wishes, George
