Automated Scheduling, Optimisation & Planning Research Group (ASAP)
EPSRC Funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Novel Approaches to Radiotherapy Planning
The main aim of this research is to investigate the potential of a
variety of artificial intelligence and operational research techniques,
with an emphasis on case-based reasoning, in the efficient generation of
radiotherapy treatment plans. Such an approach would avoid tiresome and
difficult knowledge acquisition that would arise in the development of a
rule-based expert system for radiotherapy. Case-based reasoning has been
successfully applied to a wide range of domains, but its application to
radiotherapy planning has been very limited up to now. The project
requires a multidisciplinary effort, and comprises both theoretical
analysis and practical software implementation. The research will be
carried out under the supervision of Dr Sanja Petrovic (see:
http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~sxp).
This is a joint research proposal with Coventry University. Two large
hospitals, Nottingham City Hospital and the UHCW NHS Trust in Coventry,
which are both providing radiotherapy treatment to a large population
throughout their respective regions, are acting as collaborators on the
project. They will provide real-world data and expertise in the domain
of radiotherapy treatment.
The /Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning Research group/
(ASAP) is one of four major groupings within the School. The School
obtained a Grade 5 in the 2001 RAE. ASAP is concerned with
investigating and developing Artificial Intelligence and Operational
Research approaches to a vide variety of problems. It is
internationally recognised for its research work. The group has 9
members of academic staff, 1 industrial fellow, 23 research assistants,
48 PhD students and 4 administrators. Further details are available on
the WWW at: http://www.asap.cs.nott.ac.uk/.
Candidates must have a PhD in a subject related to the project. Salary
will be within the range 24,402 - 30,913 per annum, depending on
qualifications and experience (salary can progress to 34,793 per annum,
subject to performance). This EPSRC funded post is available from
December 1, 2007 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a
period of 2.5 years. *Please quote ref. SP/01.*
Candidates should send a detailed CV, together with the names and
addresses of two referees, to Mr N Poxon, School of Computer Science and
IT, The University of Nottingham, Jubilee Campus, Wollaton Road,
Nottingham, NG8 1BB, UK. Email: [log in to unmask]
