Hi Chris
Added welcome to Frank's, as far as your points are concerned all are relevant but I believe in
this case what we are seeing is a GP medicalising a personal issue. I might add that sleep
deprivation occurs just as frequently to people working daytime as night, those of us who get up @
6am and drive for one and half hours to get to work will attest to this.
Hence, the reason why the Spitting of dummy comment and the fact that if OH decide to get involved
in this case to any great extent you night as well bi-pass line management and Human Resources and
send all problems that could/might/have a tentative link to causing or be anyway associated with
medical problems. Perhaps the fact that diesel is now over *1 a litre might also be a cause for
concern, are OH going to offer to see every member of stafff this affects, answer no.
Getting GP's to do something as straight forward as suggesting a person go and speak with his
employer about his concerns is far too complicated, write a med 3 that says sleep deprivation and
bobs your uncle they're out of the surgery.
I think the most telling point in all of this is the fact that this person spent all of 2 nights
doing these shifts before running to his GP, not his employer.
Cheers

Forgive the intrusion into this thread, I am very new to OH and my
background is mental health nursing and currently working in private sector,
mental health rehabilitation (back to work). I have just started studying
the diploma in OH at Glamorgan University.
I have read your thread with interest and would ask;
Is it not the place of OH to explore with the driver his concerns about
night work?
Would OH consultation not at least eliminate that personal stressors are
behind his behaviour?
Could it be that he has developed a problem since he last disclosed health
status? If so which department is responsible for establishing this?
Would it not help for OH to at least look at the problem * if HR take
control of the issue, they may not understand if there were psychological
issues at play and in turn could escalate a simple situation.
In our industry if a med3 is produced, we can overturn it by use of ICD10
definitions and/or use of an OHP, would this cost implication be too much
for a business? Also how does the GP justify sleep depravation from just 2
days of no sleep?
Sorry if I sound naïve but I am trying to get a handle on why OH would want
to let HR or management sort it out and if a *medical reason* has to have a
physical cause.
I do understand that if the driver was not involved in the change of shift,
he is likely to unhappy, so is this what makes it an HR problem?
Your responses would be very much appreciated as they will valuable to my
learning.
Chris

Many thanks for the advice re the chap who has decided he cannot work
nights. You have confirmed my own views as he disclosed no health reasons
for not being able to work nights. However his GP ahs provided a med3 with
sleep deprivation on and he has been re-referred back to OH!!!!!!
Many thanks
Ellie

HR will always bump this sort of thing into the OH area, it ia not an OH
issue, push it straight
back to HR and line management, he has no underlying health reasons for not
doin
g night shifts,
therefore purely perosnal, therefore management/HR decision. Do not budge or
you will be deciding if
he can retire at 55 instead of the company policy of 60!!

Dear List
Just a quick question. We have seen a HGV driver absent with anxiety since
his shift was changed 3
weeks ago to Night Shift. He has disclosed no underlying health issues that
would prevent him
working nights and has worked 2 night shifts, complained he could not sleep
and then went sick.
The question is...is this an OH issue or a management issue with regard to
change management?
There is a similar situation with a colleague who is now absent with anxiety
as he could not get
the shift change he wanted to accomodate his personal circumstances.
I have my own thoughts but the associated HR department disagree!!!!
Thanks
Ellie
