Glenn,
Yes Stephen Fry programme was excellent, role on next Tuesday when they
will show part two.
Any agency who supply staff to the NHS has to comply with the guidelines
laid down by PaSA (Purchasing and supply agency). If they are
undertaking EPP's, they must supply their laboratory report with a IVS
(identity validated sample) stamp, for HepB ab, HepB ag, and HepC, HIV.
Part of my role is to assess the OH file of these health care workers
and when they are compliant (provided evidence of rubella, chicken pox,
HepB ab,HepB ag, HepC,HIV, BCG scar/positive mantoux,medical
questionnaire) the booking page is opened, it can not be opened if they
have not supplied all of the above. A fit to work is issued (valid for
one year) and is assessed annually.
In my experience of working in both the NHS and agency capacity the
rules are tighter to place staff via an agency under the PaSA framework.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] HIV testing
Hello
did anyone see the programme last night on BBC2 by Stephen Fry, 'HIV and
me'. It was excellent and certainly raises concerns amongst people who
continue to adopt risky practices and behaviour.
However this leads me to raise the question again on routine HIV
testing.
The new DOH guidance suggest that new NHS employees are offered HIV
testing, whereas those undertaking EPP have to be tested.
My concern, as raised before on this list, are those who work for
Agencies, and who have come to the UK form countries where HIV/AIDS is
present in as much as a quarter of the population. Should these not be
tested?
We have Policies whereby those from areas where TB is endemic are
screened so surely this should also be the case in relation to HIV
especially as more people are migrating to the UK and working in health
providing settings.
What do others think?
Regards
Glenn
