Hi Sally,
I work within the NHS and we are now in uniform, as the previous chief
nurse felt it was important for other staff, patients and visitors to
know what role each staff member had. Personally, I feel that wearing a
uniform within our specialty is very much a retrograde step. While I
appreciate we still carry out clinical work, we are not dealing with
patients as such.
On occasion I have witnessed a degree of prejudice when a senior
consultant refused to have blood taken by "a junior nurse" (a very
well-qualified staff nurse, as it happened!) and demanded that only a
senior nurse in a purple uniform could take his blood!
Having entered OH before uniforms were introduced, I can see both sides
of the story but, given a preference, I would go back to wearing navy
trousers and a white blouse in a heartbeat.
Kind regards,
Rita

Hi all,
I work within the NHS and as a group of occ health nurses, we are
debating the wearing of uniforms for clinical duties.
I understand some Trusts have them and others don't. We currently do
not
receive a clothing allowance and this is causing further debate.
What do other NHS nurses think?
Thanks for your help.
Sally
