Dear all
A long time ago I was sent some useful websites that help in finding out what 'old' amounts are worth today.
http://measuringworth.com/calculators/ppoweruk/
(really useful calculator where you input the 'old' amount and year and the desired 'modern' year you want the answer in)
http://www.ex.ac.uk/~RDavies/arian/current/howmuch.html
(scroll down a bit - the UK sites are under the international ones)
So, apparently, according to measuringworth.com, using the retail price index, £1000 in 1950 would be worth £23,674.63 in 2006.
Happy calculating!
