AAG 2008 CFP: Geographies of Play
Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers, Boston, 15-19
April 2008
Organisers: Jon Binnie, Bethan Evans, Julian Holloway and Steve Millington
(Manchester Metropolitan University, UK)
Christopher Harker (2005: 59) reminds us "Playing is not (just) kids stuff.
… Playing is something we all do, albeit to different extents and degrees,
and this is something that needs a great deal more investigation". This
call for papers responds to Harker's appeal for more critical attention to
be given to the study of the geographies of play.
We are seeking papers from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives, to
encompass child, adult and intergenerational experiences of play. We are
also calling for papers which explore innovative ways of studying the
geographies of play and embrace a wide range of diverse theoretical and
methodological approaches.
Abstracts are particularly welcome on the following topics - though we would
like to emphasise that this is a far from exhaustive list and we welcome
papers on other related topics:
- Theorising practices of play: affect, performativity and embodiment.
- Theorising spaces of play: formal, informal, online.
- Playful geographies: imaginative, creative, enchanted, magical.
- Approaching play: epistemologies of play, playful methodologies.
- Adult play: erotic and sexualised play.
- Play without frontiers: intercultural notions of play.
- Politics of play: identities and difference.
- The business of play: corporate play, play industries, gambling, video
gaming, trading cards, e-sports and pro-gamers.
- The labour of play - mundane, normalization and resistance.
- The governance of play: contested play spaces.
