Association for Tourism in Higher Education Conference 2007
‘Shaping the Future of Tourism Education in H.E.’
Draft programme now available on the ATHE website at www.athe.org.uk
The Association of Tourism in Higher Education annual conference will take
place from 5th-7th December 2007 at St Anne’s College, Oxford, UK. Keynote
Speakers confirmed: Christopher Rodriguez, Chair of Visit Britain and
Professor David Airey, Pro-VC, University of Surrey.
Tourism, as a dynamic global industry, both affects and is affected by the
physical, political, social, cultural and educational environments in which
it operates. These environments are rapidly changing and as tourism
academics we have a key role to play in framing the way Higher Education
(HE) deals with this to ensure tourism graduates are equipped with the
knowledge and skills to understand tourism as a phenomenon, to manage
tourism organisations and to shape policy for the future. The conference
will provide an opportunity to present, discuss, elaborate and seek
solutions to a range of issues which are central to present and future
tourism education, including:
Changing, political, social, and cultural environments
Changing financial cultures and pressures
Shifting aims and values of tourism HE and the drivers behind such changes
developing synergies and beneficial relationships between universities and
the business world
Internationalisation, emerging markets and impacts on tourism in HE
New approaches and developments in tourism HE teaching and learning
Pedagogic research in tourism (methods, good practice, work in progress)
Quality issues in tourism HE
Emerging subjects and topics
The nature of the student experience in tourism HE
