PhD Studentship
Football and Community Drugs Intervention
School of Applied Social Sciences
Durham University, UK
A PhD studentship is available as part of a wider Drugs Intervention Programme that uses football to assist with the re-integration of problematic drug users in the North East of England back into community life. The studentship, which is funded by the Football Foundation, will be based in the Sport section of the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University.
The PhD is available from early 2008.
The Drugs Intervention Programme has been running since 2005 and uses football to create a rehabilitative programme which offers an alternative context for drug treatment and an alternative recreational environment and culture to drug addiction. The PhD project will examine the role of the Drugs Intervention programme in improving the social, physical and mental well-being of the clients involved in the football programme. The relationship between the personal journey of the clients and the efficacy of the programme will be explored as part of the PhD project.
The specific focus of the PhD will be determined by the interests and academic background of the candidate. We welcome applications from graduates in sport and/or leisure studies, sociology, anthropology, community development, politics, public health, social psychology and other suitable disciplines.
Conditions of Award
Applicants for the above scholarship must normally be EU citizens and hold a research masters or an equivalent qualification in an appropriate discipline.
The studentship will provide a tax-free stipend (£12,600 pa for full-time study) for up to three years for a Doctorate by research, subject to satisfactory progress. The studentship also covers tuition fees and fieldwork costs.
