Subject: National Archives of Australia releases Xena 4.0

Our Xena digital preservation software is a free and open source tool
for digital preservation. Xena may be used as a desktop application or
(more commonly) via its application programming interface to perform its
two key tasks from within other digital preservation workflows. Xena is
designed to:

 * Determine file formats
 * Convert files into standards based, open formats for preservation

Key new features in the 4.0 release of Xena are:

 * Export facility (un-Xenafy) is now available through the viewer
interface
 * Audio plugin is now included by default
 * Image file metadata is now extracted from image headers
 * Archive plugin (zip, bzip, gzip etc) is now included

Please take a look at the new Xena website http://xena.sourceforge.net
and download your copy, then let us know what you think.

Thanks,

Subject: W3C AA standards

Dear List

I am currently reviewing requirements for a historical data capture=20
project. Could anyone please advise me as to whether or not it would
be=20=

feasible to request that scanned documents & drawings (planning files=
)=20
exported to PDF should be accessible to W3C AA standards.

I was of the opinion that scanned paper files would essentially be a=20
flat/rasterized image after the digitatisation process and therefore
this=
=20
standard need not apply, but I would like to be certain that this is
the=20=

case.=20

Many Thanks in advance

Subject: Local Authority Invoice Retention Periods

Dear list members,

I would be grateful to hear from members who have come across the
followi=
ng scenario and how it is managed:

An on-going series of invoices where procedurally those concerning
extern=
al grant funding are mixed with 'ordinary' invoices, creating a series
wi=
th mixed retention periods, (the standard 6 years plus current financial
=
year and the more strict audit retention requirement of funding bodies
su=
ch as the EU up to 14 years), causing an excess retention of records. It
=
is a sizeable record series causing records centre space management
issue=
s and with areas of conflict with Data Protection principles. Is this
pos=
ition common to other local authorities? =20

I'm looking for evidence of best practice guidance from any local
authori=
ties in this specific area.

Thank you,

Paul

Subject: Re: RM in cinema.

Probably already in, but how about '3 Days of the Condor', '1984' (a bit
obvious but not many more blatant examples of rewriting the records, and
made into a film starring Richard Burton, I believe), The Constant
Gardener (reports suppressed by government for the benefit of business)-
and as a lateral thought just to get Laurel and Hardy in there, 'Way out
West', where a will is misappropriated and its contents misreported to
the detriment of the rightful heiress - stretching the point, perhaps,
but worth including I think!

Fearing this may may have gone before but 'Name of the Rose ' by Umberto
Eco must be the classic to demonstrate the power of information control

* The Lives of Others - record-keeping being a staple of an
effective fascist regime...

* Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - who had the notebook? Did
they check it out? Or update the location??

* Lord of the Rings: which one?? - Gandalf flicking through the
archives of Minas Tirith (with I might add a naked flame and a lot of
dust). A good search engine would have found the answer.=20

* Sahara - Penelope Cruz uses events to find dates (not the
other way around) - innovative use of metadata

* Memento - Guy Pierce keeps the record of his life on his own
body

Yay Friday afternoon!

=20

Again, apologies for cross-posting.
=20
Further to my recent enquiry on this list about records management
training videos, I am trying now to think of films or television
programmes that portray the practice or effects of record keeping (good
or bad). I have seen a number of espionage/political thriller films like
this, but can't remember any of the titles.
=20
I've seen this topic discussed on this list before, so I apologise for
returning to the subject again.
=20
Can anyone recommend to me, perhaps off list, any films that might
illustrate records management fundamentals?
=20
Thanks in advance,
=20
James Lowry.
