Dear All,
I am just enjoying two books I have borrowed from the Institute of Education
library in London. What a pleasure to have library access during the recent
BERA conference there! Have you read these? Can you recommend other books?
Kochan, F. and Pascarelli, J. (2003) Global Perspectives in Mentoring:
Transforming Contexts, Communities and Cultures, USA, Information Age Publ.
and
Jarvis, J., Lane, D. and Fillery-Travis (2006) The Case for Coaching,
London, Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development
How do I spend Saturday evenings ... usually relaxing after a busy week but
yesterday evening there was plea for help from our 'sibling SIG' at AERA.
One review outstanding and the deadline at midnight - a wonderful surprise
to review a proposal recommending formalized mentoring for university staff.
When I became a lecturer at the University of Bath I was assigned a mentor
and she helped me greatly e.g. to learn how to write papers for publication.
I wrote up my experience in a paper called From Mentor to Mentor (attached).
Where mentoring does not exist for university staff in a formal way it can
be a very hit and miss experience to access the personal and professional
help you need, especially if you are coming from a different (school-based)
context, community and culture, hence my interest in the books I cite above.
Has anyone else on this list had experience of informal or formal mentoring
programmes/experiences in Higher Education? If so, please share them here.
Best wishes,
Sarah
