Inaugural Symposium: The Futures of the News

The nature of news and news production has changed dramatically over the
last two decades. New technology is claimed to have transformed the spaces
of the news. News journalism is changing and challenging the identities of
the occupations and organizations that make up the news industry. This one
day symposium brings together practitioners, academics and industry
specialists to discuss the production and role of news in the Digital Age.
Panel Topics include: Future directions of the news industries;
International comparisons of news; Researching news production in the UK;
Political bloggers as citizen journalists.
Speakers include: Martin Turner (Head of Newsgathering, BBC); John Glover
(Ofcom); Michael Schudson (Columbia University and University of
California, San Diego); (Annabelle Sreberny (School of Oriental and
African Studies, University of London); Michael White (The Guardian); Alex
Hilton (Recess Monkey and LabourHome); Nicola Liscutin (Birkbeck College,
University of London); and Paul Staines (Guido Fawkes).
