About The Conference
Channel 4 first started broadcasting in November 1982. Over the years the channel has transformed the experience of television in Britain, not to mention the television industry itself. Never far from controversy it could be argued that C4 has played a part in changing wider attitudes in British society, for good or ill, and debates continue to rage about its programmes and its policies.
As Channel 4 reaches 25, this major academic conference organised by the BFI assesses its impact and influence on British television and culture.
Keynote speakers are; Professor John Ellis, Professor Georgina Born, and Dr Catherine Johnson.
Many other leading scholars, including Jane Arthurs, Anita Biressi, Julia Hallam, Rod Stoneman, Dorothy Hobson, and Lez Cooke, will give papers and share their research; analysing programmes from Channel 4 News to The Tube, from Out on Tuesday to G.B.H and Big Brother.
The conference is one of a number of BFI activities around Channel 4's anniversary. In November we are publishing Maggie Brown's history of the channel 'A Licence to be Different The Story of Channel 4' and showing a season of events and screenings, 'C4@25', at BFI Southbank, as well the first day's output at our new mediatheque.
