OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
To enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities through national, regional and global efforts to:
- Raise awareness about the magnitude and consequences of disability;
- Facilitate the collection, analysis and dissemination of disability-related data and information;
- Support, promote and strengthen health and rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities and their
families;
- Promote community based rehabilitation (CBR);
- Promote the development, production, distribution and servicing of assistive technology;
- Support the development, implementation, measuring and monitoring of policies to improve the rights and
opportunities for people with disabilities;
- Build capacity among health and rehabilitation policy makers and service providers;
- Foster multisectoral networks and partnerships.
Description of duties:
To support the development of the World Report on Disability and Rehabilitation:
- Organize the meetings of the Editorial Committee;
- Liaise with the chapter authors and contributors for the drafting of the chapter;
- Organize the peer review of the report;
- Ensure the highest possible scientific quality to the report;
- Support the organization of regional consultations;
- Oversee the process of editing and publishing the report.
To support the implementation of the UN convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities:
- Map and report findings on WHO's current policy and practices that address disability as a mainstream
development and human rights issue;
- Draft a WHO policy on disability;
- Draft a variety of fact sheets on disability, health and human rights;
- Perform other related duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Post graduate degree in medicine, rehabilitation, disability studies, social science or public health.
Skills:
Good organizational skills;
Strong analytical skills and excellent scientific writing skills;
Good understanding of the international political context in the field of disability;
Good knowledge of international human rights standards and their practical implementation;
Experience of working with disabled peoples organizations and various professional bodies in the field of
disability and rehabilitation;
Work experience in developing and transitional countries;
Experience of working within a UN organization would be an advantage;
Persons with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply.
Experience:
At least 5 years work experience in the field of disability, human rights and or public health, with at least 1 year
at international level.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English, a working knowledge of another UN language would be an
advantage.
Additional Information:
A written test may be used as a form of screening.
This VN may be used to fill other similar positions.
Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD51395 at single rate
Post Adjustment: 68.6 % of the above figure(s). This
percentage is to be considered as indicative since
variations may occur each month either upwards or
downwards due to currency exchange rate
fluctuations or inflation.
