I have a student who had a DSA assessment but had recently purchased a
laptop. The assessor would have recommended a laptop or computer so
recommended that the LEA reimburse the student for the computer. The
LEA have refused. I am a bit sketchy on the details as I haven't seen
the paperwork yet.
It is my understanding that it is fairly common practice now for
assessors to recommend reimbursement, especially when students have
recently purchased the equipment. Does anyone have any advice or
experience to offer on the arguments that can be put forward to the LEA?
-----------------------------
Hi Ros,
I've recommended reimbursement of equipment in the past, within certain parameters.
I ensure that it is clear that the equipment was purchased with the intent of supporting study in
higher education, ie once the student knew that they had a place to study, that the equipment meets
the specification that I would recommend as part of an assessment, and is capable of running the
recommended assistive software and supporting other recommended technological aids. I ensure that
the student has adequate warranty and backup support for the equipment.
It is helpful to include a comparative quote, so that the LEA can see that they/the student is
getting value for money. If a PC has been purchased with a spec far above that which I would
recommend, or if they have purchased a laptop where I feel I would have recommended a desktop
machine, I ask for reimbursement from the LEA to the level of my recommended spec. or the desktop,
rather than for the total amount. I always ensure that copies of invoices are included with a
request for reimbursement.
Hope this helps,
Karen
