My Friday morning (and rest of the week for that matter) view is that
the shop is being unprofessional but not unlawful.
As for the husband shouting the odds I sense 'what are you going to give
me to make me leave this shop and stop embarrassing you all' as his real
motive rather than any sense of injustice or outrage that personal
information has been disclosed (or not as the case is here).
Another example of why the public need some education on DP and what it
actually entails.

Subject: [data-protection] Need some advice for a friend - mobile phone
sale/contract
Got this message on another board I go on, copy and pasted straight on
here in the hope that someone can help out. I've already advised that I
think no breach has taken place but that perhaps this guy is wide of
shop policy. I'm struggling to see anything illegal though. Your
thoughts please.
Original Message follows: ----------
My mate works at a phone shop, has a friend (Rick) who works in
recruitment. On of my Ricks co-workers mentioned she wanted a phone so
said go down to see my mate he'll sort you out
Went in, got a phone, dead happy blah de blah
Some kind of problem with the proofs of ID (they take photocopies) &
another copy is needed from either the 2nd sheet of a monthly bill (the
1st page was missing this detail), or of something else like a credit
card statement
Couldn't contact the customer on the new mob no (had a 30 day delayed
activation) & didn't have a works number for her
Rick pops in as he's passing just to say hello as usual. My mate
mentions that his co-worker had been in got her phone. Rick mentions
that she was in work today & seemed happy with what she had got. Then my
mate asked if he'd be willing to pass a message on about the proof of ID
problem.
All that was said to Rick was that he needed to speak to her & a very
brief description of the problem. Literally that he just needed either a
copy of the 2nd sheet or a copy of a statement. No actual account
information was passed onto Rick
Rick passed on the message as asked & within an hour she made a snotty
phonecall to the store about how unproffessional it was that they hadn't
called her (even though they didn't have a number- thats beside the
point though) Then mentioned that she was fuming & was very pissed off
that her information had been given out to people
One hour later her husband was in the store claiming that my mate had
broken the law (DPA) by releasing information to someone who isn't the
account holder
Seems to be getting out of control, customer is taking it further & is
adament that he's broken the law because "he told someone that she owns
a credit card & is with Virgin media for her broadband"
Now to me that sounds daft
Bank details, address, date of birth, phone number etc
Those are personal details. Not "she owns a credit card" or "she has
virgin broadband"
Thats like saying you brak DPA if you tell someone what colour someone
else's hair is.
